Type 1 diabetes is the most common metabolic disease in children and adolescents.
The number of people developing type 1 diabetes is rising worldwide. For the children and their families this means a huge upheaval in their everyday life. People with type 1 diabetes need to monitor their blood glucose, inject insulin regularly, and adjust their activities according to their metabolism. Children with type 1 diabetes and their families are every day heroes.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can affect anyone.
We want to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes with our campaign because type 1 diabetes can affect any child. That’s why type 1 diabetes concerns everyone. You too can activate your superpowers and support our campaign by talking about type 1 diabetes in your community, posting about the campaign on social media, donating towards our research, and taking part in our studies!
K1DS ARE HEROES is an initiative by the Global Platform for the Prevention of Autoimmune Diabetes (GPPAD). Together with European partners, we have been researching the causes of type 1 diabetes for many years. Our goal is to develop treatments that start before type 1 diabetes even occurs. We want to do this to prevent type 1 diabetes. Our joint research mission is: A world without type 1 diabetes.
We do research to prevent type 1 diabetes. We do this by testing new-born babies for an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes. We also offer studies that aim to detect type 1 diabetes when the disease is at a very early stage, before symptoms appear. All the children in our studies are heroes to us because, without them, our research would not be possible.
